This new elementary school’s design acknowledges the traditional overtones of its historic context’, while incorporating architectural artifacts from its predecessor schools. The new building accommodates 16 Classrooms, a Science room, Computer room, Library, 2 Junior Kindergartens, 2 Senior Kindergartens, Administration, Change Rooms and a double Gymnasium with sprung wood floors. The double Gymnasium and Library are designed to be fully accessible to the community for after-hours use. The Kindergarten outdoor play area is surrounded by a wrought iron fence flanked by toy storage sheds, accessed through a portico from a drop-off area. Buses deliver children to the school front along a fenced kiss ‘n’ ride island with controlled access point to de-conflict pedestrians and vehicular traffic.
This project received the Peter J. Stokes Heritage Commendation Award & Niagara-on-the-Lake Commendation for Exemplary Contemporary Design.
